Patrick Evens suggested the class of 1961 Oak Ridge High School start a message board. I wanted to make an easy to use and Free forum so everyone could participate and share experiences and information about getting together, for reunions, weekend trips, and events. This is a start, so while we work the bugs out, be patient and feel free to make suggestions on improving this site. Attachments:

This forum will be for members of the class of 1961, although students who attended Oak Ridge from other classes during 1961 are invited to join and share in the forum as well. There is no cost to participate and there will be few rules to follow. Since this will be a family oriented site, we would ask that you keep the posts appropriate for everyone to share. Thank you for participating and let's begin.

Let me start off this forum by asking what teachers had significant impact on your future and influenced you to choose a career? I would like to mention Mr. Runge, who taught commercial art at the vocational school downtown on Livingston St. I was able to get my start in graphic art from this experience and his cool method of teaching. We went for half a day to vocational school and half a day at high school. I attended Boone in 1960 and Oakridge in 1961. I would find it interesting to know if anyone else felt that they were influenced by a special teacher or the method that the teacher used to instruct that was particularly different from the normal methods used by most instructors.

That's good news, Pat. I don't think it will be too hard for others to understand. We may have to send a short message to the emails sent out on logging in and posting a reply. Who have you contacted so far? I'll try to help if I can, also I want to find out how to send more pictures or videos. You can always post a video to Youtube and direct others to the video that way. I'm sure there are more whistles and bells to use, but I'm not a pro at using these ways of contacting others yet. We will grow together. Thanks, Jim

This one is for Wayne Neet.
May 5, 1961 - Alan Shepard - Freedom 7 - First American in space
We hitch-hiked over to the Cape and slept on the beach for 3 days waiting for the launch, showering at Patrick AFB, watched the launch then hitch-hiked back to Orlando. I think we had about $20 between us.

At least 9 members of our class served in the military: USAF - Terry Lefler; Wayne Childress; Wayne Neet; Pat Evans; and Doug Wendt. Army - Doug Karczewski, John Hefferan. Marines - John Matchett. Florida National Guard: AJ Head Jr.
Some photos of my time in SAC
2nd Bomb Wing Operational Readiness Inspection Quick Reaction Launch (Barksdale AFB, LA)
You might recognize the tall guy in the middle of the picture. Its Jimmy Stewart, the actor and USAF Reserve Brigadier General, returning from a bombing mission in Vietnam aboard one of our aircraft. (Andersen AFB, Guam)
Lets hear from anyone else that served and tell us about your service travels and experiences.

Here's some shots of Jim Lee (a/k/a musicman) playing the sax.
I used musicman because that's the first thing that came to my mind about
my year at Oakridge. I was the only senior in the school band and was the
president of the band. It wasn't the best band in the world by far but we
tried. I played a baritone saxophone in the band. I had never played a sax
before, but the band director called me on the phone and asked if I would
want to play the horn which the school had just purchased and he had no
one to play it. I said I didn't know how to play it but I was interested in trying.
So I got it and brought it home, and taught myself how to play it that summer.
When school started I joined the band with little knowledge of what I was
doing. The director Mr. Bosworth said " join in and play the notes when
you know them and if you don't know them don't play them." I said in that
case "you got a deal". There is a picture in the year book of myself and five
other guys playing in a dance band at the first school dance. About a year
later I joined a four piece band and made enough money to buy my own
tenor sax. I played professionally for five years at several Air force and
Army clubs as well as all around night clubs in the Central Florida area.
I gave it up when I got married, because I had to make a choice between
music and a career where I could have steady work, and be able to be
a family man. But it was fun while it lasted!
Sorry Jim, it was too good not to publish.
